From September 2026, all children in families receiving Universal Credit will be entitled to free school meals regardless of income level. Previously, households earning over £7,400 a year did not qualify, meaning many children living in poverty were missing out.
This is the biggest expansion of free school meals in years, and it's great news for families in our school community.
Your child is likely eligible if your household receives Universal Credit, even if you're working. Other qualifying benefits include:
Registering your child brings additional funding to our school, known as the Pupil Premium. This money is used to support every child's learning, wellbeing and wider school life, regardless of whether they take a meal.
If your child takes even a few meals a week, the savings are real. Families could save up to £495 per child each year, and more if you have children in multiple year groups.
Research shows that a healthy school lunch improves concentration, behaviour and attainment. It's one less thing to think about on a busy morning, too.
You'll need your National Insurance number. Most applications are confirmed quickly.
If you need any support completing the application, please contact the school office.
